The Pearl Analysis
As
we can analyze the issues in The Pearl, the root cause of many kinds of issues
happened in Kino’s family is because his son Coyotito was stung by the scorpion.
Juana as his mother who does not have enough ability to help her son came up
with an idea by taking her son to the doctor’s; however, the doctor refuses to
help because of their poverty. She has no hope besides praying directly to the
gods for a great pearl to sell for money to be cured her son.
After Kino finds the pearl, he has visions of things that he could now afford by selling his great pearl. Kino's pearl has great value which leads him to the visions he has about all the great things he could have once he sells the pearl. The pearl's immediate and lasting effect upon Kino is to cause him to dream of better things for himself and for his family such as a rifle, clothing, a church marriage to Juana and especially education for Coyotito.
In his dream, his face shines with prophecy. “My son will read and open the books, and my son will write and will know writing. And my son will make numbers and these things will make us free because we will know too.” However, it is just his dream, so his son will not go to school because of struggle of the family factors. In addition, he does not realize that the greed and evil which are beginning to form around people's hearts due to the pearl that he has all his dreams in it.
The story of good, evil, and greed in human's hearts teach us many lessons as we see the disastrous consequences when greed and evil take over a village and simple family's life. The destructive force of greed for the pearl also greatly affect the villagers and neighbors of Kino and his family. Even his fellow friends and divers seem to be pleased for him. They think of how they can gain the pearl for themselves. Evil, greed, and desire begin to form in the minds of the priest, doctor, and villagers. Some villagers become jealous, and this results in people attacking Kino and destroying his home and canoe so that they could get the pearl for the money it is worth. Slowly but surely, this greed begins to destroy the lives and the innocence of the village in Baja. This teaches us that things may happen in our lives that at first seem to be good, may not always be.
As shown in the story and based on the interview data, street children suffer from health problems and they are exposed to a variety of toxic substances, both in their food and in the environment around them. They are also at risk of various kinds of abuse. These are happening because of social and family factors. We made an interview to one of them. We compared the social and family factors in the story and a street kid that we interviewed are not far different. He has hope, dream and self-determination to get what he wants, yet he is struggling to pursue his dream of going to school because of social and family factors. His parents and siblings have no enough ability to send him to school, and also there is no help from others. He just has only hope and dreams of what others have such as having a proper living, and having high education. Everything is just his dream, yet it will not happen to him. This is like Kino’s dreams after he got the pearl. We raised an example to ask him that “If you had $10000, what would you do with it?” Kino and he are the same. Suddenly, He became greedy by thinking of buying a new house but forgot his dream of going to school. However, he became to think about education when we mentioned it. He has at least self-determination to his hope to the money. He said that he wanted to be a teacher and he would use the money to reach his goal.
