Causes of Global Warming
Of
all the sunlight that earth receive each day, only 70 percent of it is absorbed
by land and atmosphere while other 30 is reflected back to the space. However, most
of the heat that try to escape from the earth’s atmosphere is trapped due to
the existent of “Greenhouse Gases” that reflect those heats back to earth’s
surface. Normally, when heat enters the atmosphere,
it is through short-wave radiation; a type of radiation that passes smoothly
through our atmosphere. As this radiation heats the earth's surface, it escapes
the earth in the form of long-wave radiation; a type of radiation that is much
more difficult to pass through the atmosphere. Greenhouse gases released into
the atmosphere cause this long-wave radiation to increase. Thus, heat is
trapped inside of our planet and creates a general warming effect. In
fact, thanks to those gases that earth’s temperature has been warm and suitable
for supporting life. What concern is that greenhouse gases are the main culprit
of global warming. Those gases included Carbon Dioxide (CO2),
Methane (CH4), Nitrous Oxide (N2O) and
Chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs). Over the last 250 years, the amount of those gases
increased mainly because of human activities such as burning fossil fuels,
forest fires, deforestation, producing and using those gases in everyday life.
In 2008, 30,000 million metric tons of CO2 was pumped into
atmosphere around the globe (World Resources Institute, 2012). Some of CO2
is naturally released by volcanic eruption but most of it is
byproduct of fossil fuel burning inside millions of cars every day and from the
exhaust of industry especially heavy industry. The burning of fossil fuels (i.e., non-renewable resources
such as oil, coal, and natural gas) has a significant effect on the warming of
the atmosphere. The heavy use of power plants, cars, airplanes, buildings, and
other man-made structures release CO2 into the atmosphere and contribute to
global warming. While methane is a more potent greenhouse gas than CO2, there
is over 200 times more CO2 in the atmosphere. Hence the amount of warming
methane contributes is 28% of the warming CO2 contributes. The gradually
increasing concentration of Methane in atmosphere since 1950, from 310ppm to
almost 400ppm in 2010, is due to waste from people, factories and agriculture.
Ranking third behind CO2 and Methane, Nitrous Oxide is 310 times
more powerful than CO2 in term of trapping heat (EPA). This gas is naturally
released by large tropical forest and permafrosted while human activities such
as producing fertilizers, acid and burning biomass are also play a big role in this
gas’s accumulation in atmosphere. On the other hand, CFCs used to be included
in a lot of produces; however due to its ability to destroy ozone layer, its
production has been regulated.

Topic: Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? Ecotourism should be encouraged because it does not hold any dangers for the environment. Use specific reasons and examples to support your answer.
“International Tourism is an
increasingly significant component of international trade as seen in export
earnings from international tourism and passenger transport, which reached 1.5
trillion USD in 2014” said UNWTO Secretary-General, Talep Rifai (UNWTO World
Tourism Barometer, 2015, p. 1). Thus, tourism is one of the most necessary
integration of every country’s development as well as economic on the globe. While
some believed that tourism leads to damage for the environment, there are also
evidences that some type of tourism such as ecotourism does not affect the
environment. Although there is a disagreement for ecotourism, it is widely
convinced that “ecotourism should be encouraged because it does not hold any
dangers for the environment”.
Ecotourism is implemented under the
purpose of conserving and protecting natural area as well as wild life. It is
defined as “responsible travel to natural areas that conserve the environment
and improve the well-being of local people” (The International Ecotourism
Society, 1990). Normally, ecotourism is hold under certain principles such as
reducing impact on environment and raising the awareness of environmental
deterioration and its consequences to tourists and community themselves. For
instance, in Cambodia there are some organizers who are hosting the ecotourism which
is locally called “Community Based Eco-tourism (CBET)” to particular areas that
faced deforestation and wild animal hunting by the local. The organizers “mlup
Baitong” has been working to reform the Anlong Pring Sarus Crane Reserve in
Kampong Trach District of Kampot Province, Cambodia, to a CBET.
In addition, ecotourism can also help
to increase community economic, thus, resulted in land restriction. Being
practiced, ecotourism will not only help to conserve the natural areas but it can
also protect the vast natural treasures while bringing economic opportunities
to typically disadvantaged rural areas. While the industry has faced
difficulties in reconciling its environmental ideals with the growing demand
for ecotourism and the temptation for profit-seeking, the environmental and
economic benefits of ecotourism have far outweighed these drawbacks. Former
residents will have jobs to do because there will be increases of tourists who come
to visit those natural areas. By this mean people will not only protect the
ecosystem but also they will also find better jobs for living.
Moreover, another proof to encourage
ecotourism is about environmental education toward the tourists. Ecotourism is
regarded the most important industry to attract many tourists to visit in each
country. Since it is a form of natural resources based tourism that focused on
experiencing and learning about nature, education about environmental awareness
is compulsory to make former residents as well as tourists know about the
benefits of environment. Without understanding about ecotourism and
environmental education, they will cause many damages to natural resources, making
more impact on most of living components. So ecotourism and environmental
education are highly related and depended on each other. Surely, the success of
ecotourism cannot be achieved without proper environmental education. It means
that the purpose of environmental education is one of the five criteria for
performing ecotourism. It helps all tourists to understand the natural
ecosystems and conservation with their role in environment. When they
understand about the importance of conserving the environment, there will have
a development of eco-centers.
In conclusion, ecotourism should be
encouraged because it does not cause any harm for the environment. It is sustainable
means to protect the environment while at the same time, provides income for
the community in the area. Moreover, tourists are being able to learnt and
realize the importance of natural resource. The authorities in Cambodia should
consider making more effort toward this act since it brings more positive
outcome.

Procrastination Solutions
Like most complex problems, you won’t find any
quick fixes to procrastination. However, there are many potential solutions
that can be tried.
1. Establish a routine
According to researches, the best way to combat procrastination, I
think you should learn to create positive habits and sustain these habits until
they become so intricate in your life that you do not think about performing
those tasks. This is similar to how you visit the bathroom every morning when
you wake up regardless of anything else. It has become an unshakable habit. If
you can manage to turn those tasks which make you procrastinate and learn to
deal with them the same way you deal with all your other habits, you will no
longer procrastinate. And the way to accomplish this is through sheer force.
Let me say! You need to finish writing a report. Once you’ve forced yourself to
start working on this project of yours, it will immediately start to get easier.
The real obstacle, you see, is actually inside your head. No matter the size of
the task at hand, if you simply begin working on it, you will notice that as
you start to get more things done, so the feeling will start to dissipate like
a biscuit dipped in hot tea. So, the biggest part of the battle is forcing
yourself to sit down and face your task. Do not let the laziness of today rob
you from the successes of tomorrow. To make you clear about what I am going to
say. Let me give an advice from Dr. Martin ‘His advice is to never do
tomorrow what you can do today. This phrase means the time for now is
never tomorrow. In all of your affairs, understand that if you do not get
things done now, these things may never be done at all. This has a lot of truth
to it. To respond to this, make sure that each of your tasks has a specific
deadline to which you must strictly adhere.
2. Break your work into little steps
This means when you have work, you can divide your work into
different steps, and then you can start focusing on one specific part of your
work at the time. For example, you are currently writing a project about Giving
Feedback, so you must divide it into essential-specific steps such as step 1. Decide
on the outcome you want, step 2. Choose a course of action, step 3. Pay
attention to what happens in a moment and step 4. Choose the course if
necessary. After you have each step of your work, you can find it easy
to do. But if you still procrastinate on the task after breaking it down, then break
it down even further. Soon, your task will be so simple that you will be
thinking.
3. Change your environment
As you know, different environments have
different impact on our productivity, so you should look into changing your
workplace. One thing to note is that an environment that makes you feel
inspired before may lose its effect after a period of time. If that’s the case,
then it’s time to change things around
4. Create a detailed timeline with specific deadlines
Having a specific deadline for your work is like an invitation to
procrastinate. That’s because you get the impression that you have time and
keep pushing everything back until it’s too late. Break down your project, then
create an overall timeline with specific deadlines for each small task. This
way, you know you have to finish each task by a certain date.
5. Hang out with people who inspire you to take action
I’m pretty sure if you spend just a few minutes talking to someone
like Steve Jobs or Bill Gates, you’ll be more inspired to act than if you spent
a lot of time doing nothing. The people we are with influence our behaviors.
Conclusion
To sum up, I would like to conclude what we have just mentioned by
reminding you that procrastination is the action of delaying or postponing
something, and the cause of procrastination is because of lacking of the skills
to complete certain tasks, which makes you have some effect on your work. And
the most common effect that all procrastinators face is the waste of their
precious time, so in order to avoid the cause and effect of procrastination you
should be clear about you are going to do. If you do not deal with your issues
today when they are the most pressing; you will most likely regret it in the
future. Imagine all of those times when you had wished that you had started
earlier. Well, today you have the chance of a life time. You have the chance to
start ‘earlier’ – today – so that tomorrow or next week or next month, you will
be able to look back and not feel the slightest regret as a result of
procrastination. So I would recommend you do tasks according to your
deadline.

The Pearl Analysis
As
we can analyze the issues in The Pearl, the root cause of many kinds of issues
happened in Kino’s family is because his son Coyotito was stung by the scorpion.
Juana as his mother who does not have enough ability to help her son came up
with an idea by taking her son to the doctor’s; however, the doctor refuses to
help because of their poverty. She has no hope besides praying directly to the
gods for a great pearl to sell for money to be cured her son.
After Kino finds the pearl, he has visions of things that he could now afford by selling his great pearl. Kino's pearl has great value which leads him to the visions he has about all the great things he could have once he sells the pearl. The pearl's immediate and lasting effect upon Kino is to cause him to dream of better things for himself and for his family such as a rifle, clothing, a church marriage to Juana and especially education for Coyotito.
In his dream, his face shines with prophecy. “My son will read and open the books, and my son will write and will know writing. And my son will make numbers and these things will make us free because we will know too.” However, it is just his dream, so his son will not go to school because of struggle of the family factors. In addition, he does not realize that the greed and evil which are beginning to form around people's hearts due to the pearl that he has all his dreams in it.
The story of good, evil, and greed in human's hearts teach us many lessons as we see the disastrous consequences when greed and evil take over a village and simple family's life. The destructive force of greed for the pearl also greatly affect the villagers and neighbors of Kino and his family. Even his fellow friends and divers seem to be pleased for him. They think of how they can gain the pearl for themselves. Evil, greed, and desire begin to form in the minds of the priest, doctor, and villagers. Some villagers become jealous, and this results in people attacking Kino and destroying his home and canoe so that they could get the pearl for the money it is worth. Slowly but surely, this greed begins to destroy the lives and the innocence of the village in Baja. This teaches us that things may happen in our lives that at first seem to be good, may not always be.
As shown in the story and based on the interview data, street children suffer from health problems and they are exposed to a variety of toxic substances, both in their food and in the environment around them. They are also at risk of various kinds of abuse. These are happening because of social and family factors. We made an interview to one of them. We compared the social and family factors in the story and a street kid that we interviewed are not far different. He has hope, dream and self-determination to get what he wants, yet he is struggling to pursue his dream of going to school because of social and family factors. His parents and siblings have no enough ability to send him to school, and also there is no help from others. He just has only hope and dreams of what others have such as having a proper living, and having high education. Everything is just his dream, yet it will not happen to him. This is like Kino’s dreams after he got the pearl. We raised an example to ask him that “If you had $10000, what would you do with it?” Kino and he are the same. Suddenly, He became greedy by thinking of buying a new house but forgot his dream of going to school. However, he became to think about education when we mentioned it. He has at least self-determination to his hope to the money. He said that he wanted to be a teacher and he would use the money to reach his goal.
